“…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matthew 17:20

Yesterday morning, I put a ring on my finger. Later, I suddenly realized I was not wearing it anymore. “I must have put it in my pocket or my purse,” I surmised. When I finally arrived home, I went through my purse and my pockets and searched the van. It was not there. I called the places I had been to ask them if anyone had turned in a ring. They answered no. I fretted – trying to remember when and why I had taken it off.

I prayed.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

“The neighbor just ran her car into the tree in our front yard. What do I do?” my eldest son, in a harried voice, asked me over the phone. He had been left at home to baby sit his siblings. I responded with questions, “Were the kids in the car with her? Is everyone alright? Was it the Cherry?” Afterwards, I can never fully explain why I say and do certain things during a crisis. My neighbor and her children are a million times more important than my cherry tree. I know this. However, during crisis, correct perspective often eludes me.

Running With My Bucket

“Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Matthew 6:26 (NIV)

My husband and I have matching chairs in front of our pellet stove, and we love to sit down in them together to read. He has his cup of coffee; I have my cup of tea; and there are usually piles of papers, books, and magazines. This would seem an idyllic scene, yet there is one item that detracts from it. Between our chairs sits a narrow, rectangular side table which is not quite up to the task at hand.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

John 15:5 (NIV)

Each time I move, I spend all my energy on the preparation, relocation, and resettlement. Once the move is complete, I collapse and grieve my prior settled life. Thereafter, my thoughts turn towards how well I understood my old location and did not wish to leave it. During this time of grief, I always feel displaced and separated from my new location.

Such a Deadly Peril

“Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.”

2 Corinthians 1:9 (NIV)

Throughout the years when my sister-in-law was lost in the world of drug addiction, we prayed and called upon our family and church to pray with us. Having faith through dark times was not easy. It was heart wrenching to be so geographically far from the situation with prayer our only option. Yet, God affirmed to me once again that prayer was, and will always be, the most effective option.
