Math Olympics
Josiah participated in the school wide Math Olympics on Friday. I was disappointed to discover that it did not involve a whiteboard, markers and a large time clock. Josiah was a part of the reasoning team which solved word problems. They all took several series of tests. He came in 3rd place. I asked him who beat him and he replied, “some other kid who looked like a nerd.” I guess that’s to be expected.
Alesha just particpated in the math olympics, now let me start out with this disclaimer. She didn’t get any of her mathematical brilliance, which I feel somedays mirrors savant like behavior, from me….I have NONE! Anyway she was having a good day and felt she had done well….and then the students showed up from the larger Fargo ND schools. Where they have math competition clubs and uniforms. Well Alesha thought she did well until she heard one of the Fargo girls crying because she only got 23 right and thought she let her team down….Alesha was “high fiving” herself at 14 right untill she heard the girl crying. Needless to say the Fargo students took all the placements. And I like to think Alesha came home a little smarter that day in the ups and downs of life.
